The biggest challenge I have is educating people with Water Ionizer Information that the information doesn't make their eyes gloss over with technical terms. Teaching is not telling information - it's seeing that the information is learned and understood.
With this in mind I have attempted to explain ionization and water ionizer information terms with analogies and examples to help you "get it".
Most water ionizers include an activated block water filter (which operates before ionization) to remove your basic chemicals as found in most treated city water. The reason carbon is good for this is it has thousands of pores with, like a sponge, can attract and hold onto chemicals. Carbon is the same material used in the popular sink filters like Brita, except usually larger in a water ionizer.
Carbon Filters do not remove viruses, bacteria, etc. For this there are other types of filters. One thing to watch is teh replacement cost of filters before you but a water ionizer as they need to get replaced every 6-9 months on average.
The reason french fries can kill people has to do with antioxidants. Whenever you see a cut apple turning brown you've witnessed oxidation. It signals a breakdown of the cells via a transfer of oxygen molecules to the apple molecules. However if there were anti-oxidant molecules on the surface of the apple it would slow down this process.
Oxidation is a chemical reaction that transfers electrons from a substance to an oxidizing agent. It can also create free-radicals which can accelerate the damage of cells.
So when you eat french fries (or any fried food) you're likely creating free radicals. That's because the high-temperature cooking with processed vegetable oils generates enormous amounts of free radicals. These free radicals deplete enzymes as well as fat and water soluble vitamins like C and E. The end result is accelerated aging and increased susceptibility to degenerative diseases.
Antioxidants stop these chain reactions and often sacrifice themselves to do so. Nature, plants, herbs, and our own bodies produce and maintain antioxidants like glutathione, Vitamin C, E, and enzymes like superoxide dismutase.
Water Ionizers, by creating large amounts of Antioxidants, can help offset and prevent the problems created by foods that create free radicals.
Electrolysis (known to most as ionization) is the process of passing electrical current through water to separate it into two streams—one with alkaline minerals for drinking and the other with acidic minerals for sanitizing. Positive and negatively charged plates is what makes a water ionizer do its job.
LED controls are simply "Light Emitting Diodes" (LED). A small semiconductor which puts out light when electricity is applied in the forward direction of the device, as in the simple LED circuit.
LEDs are widely used as indicator lights on electronic devices and increasingly in higher power applications such as flashlights and area lighting.
Besides lighting, interesting applications include using UV-LEDs for sterilization of water and disinfection of devices, and as a grow light to enhance photosynthesis in plants.
This technology uses a grid system that is incorporated into the platinum-coated titanium plates within an ionizer. The water flows in and through the electrically charged grid, increasing the electrolysis, which in turn increases pH and ORP of the water.
There's a bit of controversy about whether or not Ionization actually does this or not.
The ionization/electrolysis process creates water molecule clusters that are half the size of regular water molecule clusters. Ionized Alkaline Water has cluster sizes of 6-7 molecules as opposed to 12-13 molecules.
This makes the water "wetter" and much more hydrating because it flows through bodily tissues more easily, thus pushing toxins out of our system. The electrolysis process breaks the molecular bonding of water molecules and restructures the water clusters.
"Clustered" water is typically characterized by smaller groups of molecules and lower surface tensions and thus can more easily penetrate the cellular membrane.
This clustering process is somewhat akin to the ease of carrying a bowling ball through a normal doorway versus trying to carry an 8-foot diameter balloon through the same doorway.
This is one of the benefits of an alkaline water ionizer. ORP stands for Oxidation Reduction Potential. ORP is the measure of the machine's ability to create anti oxidant properties in the water. In general, the higher the negative number, the better.
Please keep in mind that light, air, heat, and magnetic and electrical components running near the water can have an adverse affect on ORP.
This is also the hardest measurement to determine. You must use a high quality ORP meter that is calibrated and even then you will notice fluctuations throughout the day.
This is one of the major benefits of an alkaline water ionizer. The main thing to note is that the pH is measured in logarithms (like an earthquake). This means the difference between a pH reading of 8 compared to 9 means that the 9 is TEN times stronger than the 8.
So when you see an ionizer that creates 11.0 pH, this means the pH is three times stronger than water at 10.7.

Surface area is the measure of how much exposed area an object has. It is expressed in square units. If an object has flat faces, its surface area can be calculated by adding together the areas of its faces. Even objects with smooth surfaces, such as spheres, have surface area.
In an ionizer, an electrical charge is delivered to the water through an array of metallic plates. The majority of quality water ionizers contain plates that are made with titanium with platinum coating. These plates are safe; they work efficiently, and they last.
Watch out for phrases like "platinized titanium,” as these are not platinum/titanium plates. It is ideal for the plates to be dipped, not just spray coated.
UV (ultraviolet) light is a form of electromagnetic radiation that can kill viruses and bacteria. Water sterilized with UV meets microbiological requirements, according to drinking water regulations.
UV water purification applications range from municipal to domestic water supplies and vending machine water.
