Akai Water Ionizer Overview:

I haven't seen much about the Akai in the US lately, and even though they are better known in Europe you'd think they'd find some traction here.

There are basically two models produced by Akai: The MS600Akai Water Ionizer - and the MS900UV model which includes UV in treating the water.

Because there are so many similarities amongst brands on the market you're probably wondering:

Are any of them really all that different?

Are the ones costing $2,000-$5000 as good as the $1,200 models?

Most water ionizers on the market are the same. However there are some newer technologies and some great models at lower prices. In the final analysis I look for distinctions that really matter which include:

1 - Price/Value Comparisons

2 - Safe Plastics

3 - Ease of use (skipping all the bells and whistles)

4 - Overall Quality (electrical components, plating, etc.)

5 - Replacement Filter Costs

6 - Ease of Hookup

7 - Feedback from Consumer and Expert Reviews

So what makes the Akai Water Ionizer unique?

How To Compare Water Ionizers
By Quality

Several certification standards exist that determine quality of design and of electrical components:

UL Certified - Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (www.ul.com) is an independent lab that writes testing standards and tests products for safety and certifies them.

CE Certified - The European Commission describes the CE mark as a "passport" that allows manufacturers to circulate industrial products freely within the internal market of the EU. Most products covered by New Approach Directives can be self-certified by the manufacturer and do not require the intervention of an EU-authorized independent testing/certifying company (notified body).

ETL Certified - A product bearing the ETL Listed Mark is determined to have met the requirements of 200 prescribed product safety standards.

What I especially like about the ETL certification is the mark indicates that "the manufacturer's production site conforms to a range of compliance measures and is subject to periodic follow-up inspections to verify continued conformance".

The fact that most water ionizers are made in the Orient means that safety can be a issue, as their standards are much lower than ours.

The Akai Has UL and CE Certifications.

Conclusion

The akai water ionizer doesn't seem to be one of the up and coming water ionizers as of this review in 2012. It has most of the standard properties in the water ionizers seen today, except for undercounter usage.
